In celebration of 150 years of Matisse, My Art Museum presents Korea's very first exhibition dedicated to Henri Matisse(1869-1954). Henri Matisse, a French “Fauvist” acclaimed to be one of the finest artists in the 20th century along with Picasso, produced artworks using vast ranges of medium including oil paintings, drawings, sculptures, lithographs, “cut-outs,” and book illustrations during 50 years of his artistic life. This special exhibition introduces more than 120 original artworks as well as his series made of paper “cut-outs,” drawings, lithographs, and the costumes designed for ballet performances. One of the highlights of the exhibition, , was inspired by his voyages to Tahiti and Morocco. The artwork features vivid colors and patterns that can be discovered in nature, hence once again, proving his naivety and passion for art in the artist’s later years. The artworks in this eponymous exhibition are on display by courtesy of Pablo Picasso Museum in Munster, Collection Lambert in Avignon, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo of Monaco, and Collection Marzocco. The simple but connotative forms of Matisse's “cut-outs” had a major influence in Abstract Art and Minimalism in the 20th and 21st centuries. By providing an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of vivid colors and delicate lines alive in different media throughout the oeuvre of Henri Matisse, this special exhibition will bring comfort and happiness to the depressed hearts of the people in time of COVID-19

" What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity,

for example, a soothing, calming influence on the mind, something like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue."

(Henri Matisse, 1869-1954)

(Odalisque Drawing)

In the history of art, Matisse is commonly known as “the magician of color,” but one cannot simply overlook his sketches and drawings. Henri Matisse is indeed one of the most significant artists in modern art history, and his artistic techniques are rooted in the powerful but elegant lines that can be easily identified in the artist's nude drawings. Odalisque, a chambermaid in Turkish seraglio or a slave in a harem, was one of the major themes for Orientalism in the early 19th century, often seen in the nude artworks of various artists, including Ingres, Delacroix, and Renoir. While residing in southern France in the early 1920s, Matisse continued to show interest in the exotic Odalisque paintings. He created alluring images modeled after a woman dressed in clothing from the East or ladies of the harem he met in Morocco. The artist successfully demonstrated the juxtaposition of intense colors and forms by portraying figures in captivating ways with the ornamental background.

SEC 2. (JAZZ and Cut-out)

When it became difcult to work long hours sitting in front of the easel, Matisse began paper “cut-outs” while in bed or sitting in his armchair in 1941, with the help of his assistants. Among his cut-outs, the circus-themed <Jazz> series from 1947 is considered the culmination of the technique. The book was published by Tériade in a limited edition of 250, and one of the original print is available on view in this special exhibition. Although the subject matter of the book was circus and plays, it was titled “Jazz” for its variability in content. The configurations of these cut-outs were set in stone only after they were attached with pins and moved around several times until they were in just the right position, like puzzle pieces. Then the composition was stenciled and published into a printed book. Matisse afrmed that he was able to achieve a much higher degree of perfection with the cut-outs in the last decade of his life than he did with his paintings or sculptures. Through the cut-out technique, Matisse was finally able to end “the eternal conflict of drawing and color” as it was both “cutting directly into color” and “drawing with scissors.”

SEC 3. 발레 <나이팅게일의 노래> (Ballet The Song of the Nightingale)

In 1919, Serge Diaghilev, a Russian ballet impresario commissioned Matisse to create costumes and stage decorations for the ballet premiere of The Song of the Nightingale (Le Chant du Rossignol). The ballet is based on Andersen’s fairy tale of a mechanical nightingale gifted to the Chinese emperor by the Japanese emperor. In recreating the court of the Chinese emperor and the costumes for the ballet dancers, Matisse worked with ornaments of the East. He also added his detailed elements to the traditional design, which, as a result, created a surprisingly contemporary stage costumes – containing both exotic and Orientalist elements - even to this day. Matisse extended his artistic experiment to stage through the designs and explored the cut-out technique onto the costumes based on his childhood memories with fabrics in Bohain, for The Song of the Nightingale.

SEC 4. 낭만주의 시와 마티스 삽화 ( Matisse's Illustration of Romantic Poetry)

From 1941 to 1944, Matisse dedicated his time and energy to illustrations for books of poetries written by French Romantic and Surrealist poets like Aragon, Mallarmé, and Baudelaire. In 1932, Matisse unveiled 29 etchings as illustrations for Mallarmé’s Poesies. The illustrations display an exquisite balance between Matisse’s delicate and simple lines and the naivety and sentimentality in the poems of Mallarmé. After this work, Matisse also produced illustrations for many poetries including Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal (1947). While the illustrations of Matisse do consociate to poems, they also have independent significance as art. Since drawings are expressions of concise and quick lines rather than being descriptions of the poem itself, it invites the viewers to analyze and envisage even more. Hence, Matisse’s illustrated copies of French Romantic poems are still acknowledged and accepted as artworks.

SEC 5. (Chapel of the Rosary)

At the request of his caregiver Sister Jacques-Marie, Matisse completed Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, France over four years from 1948. This chapel, a representative modern church building of the 1930s’ L'Art Sacre movement, was a legacy of Matisse as he was directly involved in designs from he architectural floor plan to stained glass, interior murals, decorations, and even cassocks, or priest’s garments. The Chapel of the Rosary is the masterpiece of Matisse’s later years and an accumulation of the artist’s formative experiments he pursued his whole life; he finally reached the space of infinity through the balance between form and color. With the Chapel of the Rosary, Matisse created the ideal realm, where his genius creativity established all the architectural details and liturgical elements.
