My Art Museum proudly presents Max Dalton’s solo exhibition Max Dalton, Moments in Film for 90 days beginning April 16, 2021. Max Dalton is a graphic designer and illustrator from Buenos Aires who has continued a series of awe-inspiring illustrations for the past 20 years by reinterpreting pop culture in his unique style. Dalton’s name began to gain proper recognition with the back-to-back publications of the New York Times bestseller, The Wes Anderson Collection, and The Wes Anderson Collection: The Grand Budapest Hotel. Aside from films directed by Wes Anderson, Dalton took motifs from SF films and genre films from the 80s to 90s such as Star Wars and Metropolis and incorporated elaborately detailed structures into his illustrations.

This exhibition was designed and arranged with the theme of “Max Dalton’s creative illustrations of moments in the film.” In particular, commission posters created from motifs of the Korean film Parasite and the fantasy saga Lord of the Rings as well as eight unreleased series of artworks, and sketches will be available on view for the first time at My Art Museum. Dalton’s illustrations portray a film’s entire narrative into one canvas, offering viewers the kind of fun one may feel when playing Where’s Waldo, or I spy. The exhibition is divided into five Acts according to the theme of the artworks; in each Act, the viewers are invited to “watch” films via artworks and enjoy a variety of genres of illustrations ranging from children’s book illustrations to LP covers made in honor of great musical artists such as The Beatles and Bob Dylan. Moreover, part of the posters displayed at the exhibition will be available for purchase in special limited editions. Dalton’s playful illustrations will present the viewers the entertaining opportunity to rediscover films and possibly, the love for certain genres.

Max Dalton is a graphic artist based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, traveling back and forth between Barcelona, New York, and Paris. Known for his dynamic motifs from music albums, movies, to pop culture posters, he worked on the illustrated poster for “Grand Budapest Hotel” directed by Wes Anderson, a Golden Globe Award winner and four-time Academy award-winning director who is widely beloved in Korea. Dalton also created works on all of Wes Anderson’s films like “Moonrise Kingdom”, “Fantastic Mr. Fox”, and “The Darjeeling Limited” and participates in the annual group art exhibition “Bad Dads”, a tribute to the films of Wes Anderson every year. Dalton embodies renowned movies like “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, “Leon”, “Back to the Future”, and “Labyrinth” as his motifs. Dalton’s illustrations are compressed down to one scene from movies of the 1980s to the 2000s, evoking memories and nostalgia and even the joy of playing hidden pictures to the viewers.

ACT 1. Galactical Imagination

Science Fiction (Sci-Fi or SF) refers to a genre that sets in a world based on scientific facts or theory and examines it in literary and other genres of the medium. Humankind’s endless curiosity and yearning for outer space are what most likely gave birth to the sci-fi genre and established much artistic creation into the science world as technology evolved. Artists who are fascinated by outer space often reveal a greater interest in the scientific information and representation in popular culture than academically accurate scientific knowledge. Dalton, who also grew up watching many sci-fi films, has been fascinated by the genre. This is quite apparent in his illustrated homages to sci-fi films such as Star Wars and Gravity or acclaimed TV series such as Doctor Who and Rick and Morty.

ACT 2. Moments in Beloved Film

The second section introduces Dalton’s artistic posters that reconstructed some of the most famous classics of film history from the 1970s to 2010s. The motifs of artworks range from a wide variety of genres from romance and sci-fi to thriller films, and the narrative of each artwork is structured after being integrated by repeatedly watching the film. The artist brings every character to life and assembles them like miniatures which may remind some viewers of a dollhouse. Dalton particularly appreciates films by directors who are described as a “single entity” like Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, or Spike Lee, which is evident in his illustrations from films Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, and Her. The series titled “Greatest Moments in Film” is the artist’s selection of approximately 40 iconic scenes from the most acclaimed films in the last millennium. Dalton placed the character in the center and wrote the corresponding quote and script above; this series may seem simple, but its straightforwardness captures the momentous scene in the film.

ACT 3. The Grand Budapest Hotel and Nostalgia

Max Dalton encountered Wes Anderson, a director known for his beautiful mise-en-scène and fairytale-like narrative films, for the first time through The Royal Tenenbaums and was instantly drawn into the world of his films. Dalton created 111 Archer Avenue, from watching The Royal Tenenbaums. This led Dalton to his contribution to the book The Wes Anderson Collection. He participated as the illustrator of this art book with Pulitzer Prize for Criticism finalist and The New York Times film critic Matt Zoller Seitz. As The Collection was selected as “Best Book of the Month” by Amazon and become New York Times bestseller, Dalton started to gain worldwide recognition. In The Wes Anderson Collection, every single one of Wes Anderson’s films is portrayed within Dalton’s illustrations. When Wes Anderson’s film portrays times and places between reality and fantasy unexperienced by the audience evoking nostalgia and déjà vu, Dalton’s illustrations attract viewers to fall into periodical nostalgia. Like the Grand Budapest Hotel that glistens in the starry night sky, Dalton’s illustrations lead us into a world of fantasy.

ACT 4. Max's Artistic World

Dalton’s love for children’s books led to collecting vintage children’s books and eventually to illustration as well. His first illustration work on children’s book The Lonely Phone Booth, written by Peter Ackerman, was selected for the Smithsonian’s 2010 Notable Books for Children. The typewriter and phone booth that appear in The Lonely series are classical mediums that have already disappeared and currently not around. The Lonely Phone Booth delivers a heartwarming message where citizens of the vast New York City communicate and come together in solidarity through a forgotten phone booth. Illustrations from four children’s books that Dalton and Ackerman published together from David R. Godine such as The Lonely Typewriter and The Screaming Chef are available on view to enjoy the illustrations with the plot. The exhibition features The Painter’s Studio series, one of the newly created artworks for Korean viewers. The series is Dalton’s new endeavor in portraying the working methods of acclaimed artists in art history through modern illustrations. The series displays his deep respect toward the eight greatest contemporary artists such as Picasso, Monet, Kahlo, and Pollock.

ACT 5. The Sound of Music

Dalton, who also dreamed of becoming a musician as a child, still enjoys music while working as he believes music is somehow expressed and reflected in his illustrations. Posters in this section depict legendary musicians such as guitarists, vocalists, and jazz players compactly situated amongst each other. The artist also worked with Jimi Hendrix’s estate and created an officially licensed print of Jimi playing the guitar surrounded by the 30 other guitars he owned. This particular poster was sold out in the shortest amount of time. Dalton’s love for retro also appears in his other music illustrations. The artist specifically chose to work with vinyl records (LP) and illustrated LP covers of rock bands and jazz musicians in dedication to the artists he loves and respects. Specially made for this exhibition, LPs will be available to listen and enjoy with Dalton’s witty illustration within the exhibition hall.
